Squash Australia welcomes the wider Australian squash community to join in celebrating Wear It Purple Day (WIPD) on Friday 26 August.

Founded in 2010, Wear It Purple Day is about showing LGBTIQ+ young people that they have the right to be proud of who they are by creating safe spaces in schools, universities, workplaces and public places.

As a proud member of Pride in Sport, Squash Australia will welcome Wear it Purple Day Co-President and Board Director Lara Husselbee for an important discussion on how squash can help LGBTQIA+ youth.

Husselbee joined the Wear It Purple team in 2019. She is passionate about ensuring that queer young people have the support system to feel safe, empowered and included.

“Being queer and visible is a privilege not a lot of people have,” said Husselbee. “For our youth, one of the many factors impacting this is their safety and the role models they have around them.”

Squash Australia’s National Lead - Sport Development Shaun McEachin said sport is an important driver for community health, particularly for Australian youth.

“In recent months, Squash Australia has invested significantly in breaking down barriers for the LGBTQIA+ community to participate in squash,” he said.

“Supporting Wear it Purple Day, is another way for us to show that we see, support and respect LGBTQIA+ youth.”

This year’s theme is ‘Still me, still human’. It encapsulates the message of humanity, honesty, integrity and authenticity when discussing all diverse identities within the LGBTQIA+ community.
